Through the Storm: Totally Secure
Read Genesis chapters 2 & 3.
In the beginning God created us to have a very close and intimate relationship with Him, whereby we would live knowing we are safe, secure, accepted, loved and cared for as well as having a real significance and purpose for daily life.
But Adam and Eve blew it; they chose to live independently of Him. As their spiritual descendants, we too have inherited a nature that continually pushes us to live independently of God, to take control of our own circumstances and destiny. This is one of the reasons we have so much ‘spoil’ in our lives and wrestle from time to time with some self-induced storms.
We believe we know what is best for us, so our pride urges us to try to rely on ourselves, our own instincts or the world’s voice ‑ anything other than God! We build our lives on a wrong foundation, so instead of exercising faith and believing that what the Bible says about God is actually true, that He is our strong tower, refuge and fortress, or that the promises He has spoken into our lives are true, we attempt to be strong in our own strength, provide for ourselves and fight our own battles our way.
We may think that this strategy has worked for us at certain times in the past, but in the end, this pattern of living will be a disaster; something built on sand, which at some stormy point in the future will collapse.
The bottom line is: we are already secure in Him.
The bottom line is: we are already secure in Him. We need not be governed by guilt, shame and the fear of being banished from His presence like Adam and Eve. We have a totally good, loving, caring, compassionate, protective, providing Father God who is thoroughly for us, not against us. He is on our side and constantly looking out for our well-being.
Through the new covenant in Jesus’ blood, it is now possible for us to confidently approach Him for ourselves. He longs to be intimately involved in our everyday lives and for us to rely on Him to meet our basic needs for security, acceptance and significance; instead of our trying to work out these things for ourselves. We just need to make the choice to believe it is true and trust Him.
Psalm 62:8 reassures us that we can trust in Him at all times. In fact, we can trust Him enough to pour out our hearts to Him for the One who is our covenant partner is also our rock, cornerstone, strong tower, refuge, fortress, strength, shield, salvation and very good shepherd. He is totally trustworthy and we can place our total confidence (from the Latin con fido ‘with faith’) in Him for our security.

Prayer Time:
Reflect on today’s reading. Consider the honest answers to some of the following questions:
-
Who or what has been your security in recent months/years?
-
Can you identify some of the reasons this person or entity is or has been so important to you?
-
In what way has this been a substitute for wholly trusting in God?
Confess your failure to trust God in this area of your life and resolve to trust and to make Him your only security from now on.
-
Is there a current situation in your life where you are having to stand in faith for God to be your security? Will you trust Him with it? To do so is a choice.
Talk to God about it all.
