Survive and Thrive
As children of God, we are, in the words of Psalm 114 'Fearfully and wonderfully made'. Learning more about how to practically improve our own health and nutrition and that of our families can bring great benefits. The past fifty years has seen unprecedented changes in the nation's diet and lifestyle. High consumption of industrially processed foods—especially ultra-processed foods (UPFs) has been linked to a range of negative health effects.
There has been an increase in chronic diseases, as high-calorie, nutrient-poor processed foods contribute to weight gain, Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Diets high in processed foods have also been linked to mood disorders and other effects on mental health.
Such foods are often of poor nutritional quality, lacking essential vitamins, minerals, and fibre. They can also be high in additives: artificial preservatives, flavours, colours, and emulsifiers which may impact gut health. Several long-term studies have shown that high UPF consumption is associated with higher all-cause mortality.
The Bible has this to say about our bodies: Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honour God with your bodies. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
